This article still doesn't shed enough light on why they canceled the show, but it is very unfortunate. By my reckoning, this is one of the top ten shows in the St Louis area, maybe even top five. Letters went out to artists several weeks ago.

For the first time in the 21 year history of the Midwest Salute to the Arts we are sorry to have to say the event scheduled for August 28-30 2009 is canceled.
The cancellation is due to a number of factors beyond the control of the all volunteer staff and are too great to overcome at this time. It is the hope and desire of the members of Arts Council, many of whom had spent numerous years working on the show, to work with great resolve to get the event back on track for next year. We sincerely ask you keep us in mind next year.
Be sure and check this site for updates on the 2010 event.

I was so looking forward to Fairview and felt badly when they sent me the notice. Connie is right - dropping like flies. I've had (4) cancellation notices so far this year and have had to scramble to find a replacement. Very interesting to read the story you linked with your post. I also read the comments and surely sounds weird - perhaps politically motivated it appears. At the same time there are new shows popping up - Connie's Novi MI had great success this spring and I believe is having one later in the year. Itasca has a new one I'm trying 9/25 and there are more. I guess I'd be more concerned if there were not new shows popping up at about the same rate as the cancellations. Too bad though about Fairview. I heard it was extremely good in the past and I have yet to seek a replacement. Thanks so much for this post!
Too bad about this, Don. Thanks for providing the information.
The art shows are dropping like flies. It would be great if people would share any information they get about cancelled events.
Here's a small one in the Detroit area that isn't happening this year, the Huntington Woods Art Fair. It's been around forever. We exhibited in it in the early '80's. It was held in late June, sponsored by the city of Huntington Woods.
I'll try to remember to post here in this thread about other events I hear about.
