Extra Tarps

i've noticed several people talking about taking extra 10 x 10 white tarps for their ceiling.  Is this a common thing to do?  Is that for people who are using pop-up tents?  I purchased a Trimline (and I live in NM....not too much rain here), will I need a tarp for the ceiling?

  • Thank you Chris and Connie! I hadn't thought about it that way.
  • Chris has it right, Katrina. I first encountered it at Ann Arbor this summer when it was really hot. Sharon Johnston had one rigged in her tent. It was used as a buffer as the heat is caught between the top of the tent and the tarp. Pretty cool.

I did a video about AA and included some shots of this.

I'd guess it might get pretty hot in NM. Right?

Don't know which kind of tents this would work in, but can't think of any reason why you couldn't rig it to work in just about any tent.

  • I've been using a "ceiling" in my canopy for over 10 years.  I don't use it for rain as much as to keep the heat out. I hate the heat, which is why I live in northern New England. The tarps are very inexpensive and do a great job of keeping the heat in the "attic" of the tent. The temperature inside the canopy is much cooler than outside too. Also the wind doesn't catch the canopy and pick it up.

Does it work on trimlines? I don't know. But since they're so inexpensive, why not give it a try?
