  • Hi Harrison: To address your question, the ZAPP® Team recommends applying as early as possible to give yourself ample time. We also encourage all ZAPP® events to be transparent with their policies, including jury details.

In the ZAPP® system, jurors always view applicant images sorted by medium category. Event administrators have the option, however, of sub-sorting the order of these applications. Applications may be sub-sorted by the order of submission, alphabetically by last name, or by application ID number. Events cannot rearrange the order of the images within an application.

To clarify one of the points Larry made in this thread, the application ID number is not related to the original date an artist applicant registered as a ZAPP® system user. The application ID number is assigned chronologically by the system based on when an applicant first started working on the application. Because artists can start an application, save it, and return to it later, the application ID number is not directly related to the date of submission.

    • Hi Erin,

So instead of the ZAPP ID# assigned when you first registered with ZAPP, it's really the time and date of starting the application? Is that correct?

Years ago I had heard a rumor that one option was the start of the application but the two or three show directors I've asked about how the order is chosen didn't mention the start of the application at all.

Though start of an application is a confusing option, it's nice to understand exactly how the shows can set the order.

I guess the next question is what's the default setting if a show doesn't choose anything for that field?

      • Thank you for all your helpful advice, to be on the safer side i guess i have to apply as soon as possible. With Juried art services you are allowed to edit your application until deadline date that makes early application much easier, but with zapplication i don't see how that can be done, once you submit and pay for your application you are locked in, unless my navigation is not up to par. Thanks again for all the useful advice.
        • You can edit your application up until the deadline with ZAPP but it requires contacting the show directly and have them set your application back to incomplete or exception status, make the changes and resubmit without any additional fees.

          • Ok, thats good. Thank you for that information.
        • I believe you are locked in with Zapp once you applied. That does suck. I was able to get a better booth shot after I had already applied to some shows. I tried to go back to Zapp, but couldn't change anything.
  • Harrison, if you want to be a part of the show there is NO reason to wait until deadline to submit your application. I would think that most show directors would see the inherent disadvantage to alphabetical order, really disinheriting the later part of the alphabet. Maybe they do choose to do it that way, but more than likely not, I'd think, from my own experience. Any digital juries I've been a part of, actually even before digital jurying came on the scene, have show the images in order of submission. Thereby, advantaging the early submitter. As others have pointed out, the first application may sit on the screen for awhile while the jurors are given jury instructions, and also, the factor of juror fatigue when there are many hundreds of applications to look at.

As far as getting a special space at the event, if you have a preference, some events say specifically that 'date of submission' on an application will get you an advantage. In addition, if we ever had a preference we always tried to get that on the application (if there was a place for that), why wait until the money gets paid...let them know way ahead of time what your wishes are.
  • Shows using ZAPP can choose the order the jurors see the images within each medium category. Unfortunately they don't necessarily choose the order we think that they should and only they know the answer to your question.

Most of the jurors I've interviewed say get the application in early because the jurors are tired by the end of the category. But even the jurors don't know which order the show director has chosen.

Choices a ZAPP show has are alphabetical, by ZAPP ID number assigned to you when you first signed up with ZAPP, and the one we think should be the order, by submission time and date of the application because it makes the most sense.

When a show signed up with ZAPP a few years ago, the director called me and asked why I thought they weren't getting their expected number of applications. I went and looked at their "Jury Details" page and read that the jurors will see the images in alphabetical order by medium. I explained to the director that because of the that, there was no incentive for the artists to apply early.

So where do you find the "jury details' information? On the page where you click to apply to the show, directly under the show name on the left side is a link to "jury details". Not all shows fill it out and I've suggested to ZAPP to make it mandatory to fill in the information so we're not applying in a vacuum.

    • Thank you Larry, I never knew that the "Jury Info" was actually something you could click on and see their procedures. Only ONE show out of the seven I have applied for for 2011 has any info in that link. Wonder if the shows even know it's there for them to use? And I just assumed they all were by submission date....alphabetical??? That would be very unfair.
    • Yes, most of the shows I apply to do not fill in the jury details section. I have made it a point to e-mail them whenever I see it, yet have not seen any of those shows subsequently fill it in.

I had assumed until your post, Larry, that everyone was viewing in the order of submission! Alphabetical ?! Director's discretion is even worse...talk about weighting results!
