Dee Segula dies after a long illness

From Carlye Crisler:

I wish to let everyone know who remembers Dee Segula that she died quietly today after a very long illness. She was one of the most talented and prolific artists. She did art shows for many years until she could no longer do them but she continued anyway in the Washington Street Gallery. She recently had a retrospective there and then not long after she gave that up too. I will miss her and I know everyone who remembers her will miss her too.

  • I wasn't a member here and only saw this website after searching to see what had become of Dee. I'm so sorry too hear - so belatedly - she is gone. I have many of her wonderful articulated beings scattered around my house - treasured for a few decades now, and now more treasured than ever!

    • Hi Darva, this is so interesting ... and also encouraging. Dee has been gone for 10 years and yet you (and I) and who knows how many others, have collected her work and she lives on. Thanks for your comment.

  • She was one of those true artists that succeed in whatever media they choose. More than that she was a wonderful friend and will be missed by many. I can still see her sitting in her booth knitting in the later years!
  • Dee was a wonderful, creative artist. She was ALWAYS coming up with something different - from all of the pewter items, the segmented pull-animals that are hanging around my house & more. I spoke with Dee after her double lung transplant, back in Michigan, sharing living quarters with her dad,  yet she was still creating her art - although not going to shows themselves. We will truly miss her & her creative mind!

  • Dee was one of my all time favorites.  I was next to her numerous times.  When I talk about all the great committed artists from the 70's that were doing art fairs, she is one of them.
  • Dee was a fixture at shows around the country since the 1970's, and especially in Michigan in the most recent years. Always showing up with a new body of work and stretching the limits of painting, fiber, batik, etc. You loved having her as your neighbor at a show as she was kind, funny and generous and a great person to spend the weekend with. When we first started to do shows Dee was there already -- she was younger than we were and I'd bet she never did anything else except make art. Is that right?

    We'll miss you Dee.
