Credit card processing?

Any opinions on the cheapest and most flexible credit card processing out there?  I was with a company called flagship through first data and they had a number of mysterious and hidden fees.  Looking for something different for this year with a month to month contract set up.  Opinions?

  • i use the square  I get charged 2.7%  for any cc.  no monthy fees, no yeary fees.   Another friend has intuit & square.  His has used both.

  • I recommend using an online aggregation site that'll help you weigh and consider your options. I worked for a vendor at an Austin music festival and it was confusing trying to figure out how to figure out mobile credit card processing. No one carries cash anymore it seems!

  • Jedd,
My swiper stopped working with the last upgrade. I haven't had a chance to call and check my options. However, you can customize your email with your logo, etc. and the customer can sign the screen with their finger or a stylus. overall, i'm pleased with the phone and its coverage and with go payment.
  • For the first 2 shows I did this year, I borrowed a friend's Nurit 8000.  and it worked fine but then we had the hassle of waiting for the charges to hit her account and then remembering to write me a check so it was time to take the plunge.  On the advice of some fellow show artists, I went with the GoPayment.  I had an older Blackberry so needed to get something more current and went with the Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V even though it wasn't on the 'approved' list.  My RadioShak guy has the same model and uses the GoPayment swiper with it so it was perfect for me with the $25 a month unlimited data/300 minute talk plan.  and it's worked beautifully the last two shows.

Of course, learning to use that tiny keyboard is a whole other story...

    • Thank you Kathy
I am thinking of buying a Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V just to use with Gopayment. Have you had any issues?
Can You Email receipts ? Can the Customer sign on the screen?
does the swiper attach well? Any info would be great Thanks Jedd
  • I bought a Smartphone two weeks ago (Droid Incredible 2) to be able to use Square and/or GoPayment for our summer shows. I signed up for both companies even tho this phone model isn't on either of their lists of supported phones. Square said as long as my phone met the following requirements, - Running Android 2.1 or higher
    - Screen resolution of at least 320x480 and - 3.5 mm headphone port, it would work. They were correct. It works perfectly. GoPayment said get their scanner and give it a try. It didn't work and trying to use it almost fried my phone. So my choice has been made for me.

How come a big and fancy company like Intuit GoPayment can't stay current with phone compatibility and a little competitor like Square can?

Anyway, I'm very happy with Square.

  •  I'm purchasing a ipad2  for presentation factors. with a extra benefit,to do cc processing. [I'm just starting out as a art festivals. ]   I'm leaning towards square., b/c i will be doing up to 4 shows a years for now.  but  will intuit's go payment be compatible with a ipad2?  What  phone number is go-payment.

Also in this mix I received a verfone vx610.  Now I'm really over me head with banking stuff.   Is this dated technology?

Another question  Is there always a middle man between you and your bank account for cc processing?

    • If you're only doing 4 shows/year I don't see why you wouldn't just stick with the Square. I pay the $12.95/mo to GoPayment just to get my swipe rate down a percentage point, which in my case saves me a whole lot more that $12.95/mo.

Yes the Ipad2 is compatible with GoPayment: http://www.gopayment.com

I don't know what good the vx610 will do you.

Any bank or middle man is invisible to me with both GoPayment and Square. The only fees I pay are to them with nothing additional.

  • I have another question about taking credit cards. The first year I used Merchant Ware on my iphone. One day was lost by their computer. I was lucky that I kept paper copies of the charges. Last year I tried Flagship merchant and just keyed in the transactions on my computer. I want to try one of the new services on my iphone, but I have a concern about any of the transactions getting lost. Any comments?

    Thanks Patti

    • Patti, with GoPayment there's a "History" button to tap  where every transaction you've done is immediately recorded as your doing it. Also, that's the way you capture all your customers email addresses for future email lists. If your phone is lost or stolen Intuit can provide you with a complete history of your transactions.
