Hello,

I know that many/all exhibitors give “courtesy discounts” to other exhibitors during a fair.  I’ve heard of discounts ranging to not charging sales tax to 20%.     Please reply telling me what level of discount you offer, if any, and why.

Thanks

Tom

  • 10% for me.

  • Hi All,

Thanks to everyone that replied to this post.

We have decided to offer other artists and show staff a 15% discount.  We will charge sales tax.  It is unlikely that another artist will purchase a floorcloth for resale.

Thanks again, your feedback has been helpful.

    Tom

  • The vast majority of other exhibitors who purchase from me do so on a regular basis and frequently email or call me to order an item. So as a general rule I give them a 10% discount and I do not charge them tax.

  • I usually do 10-15%

  • I generally discount 15 - 20% depending on the piece.  Most if not all exhibitors in shows that I do have sales tax # which is all you have to have (even in PA) to have it considered a wholesale sale.  Even when I sell merchandise at wholesale shows, I don't have any knowledge of whether the buyer is buying for their store or personally.  If they didn't buy it for the store, they are supposed to pay use tax just like you do when you buy things online that are not for resale but for which you are not being taxed online like tools or displays. When a fellow exhibitor buys something from me, I assume they bought it for resale.

  • To artists, show staff, and volunteers: The equivalent amount to no sales tax, rounded down. If it's an older piece, down a bit more. If they pull out a credit card to pay, though, I get crabbier, though by then it's too late to backpedal on the offer. (I don't expect volunteers to carry cash, so that does not apply to them.)

If the person is a volunteer who just booth sat for me, and got interested in something because she was sitting in my booth for 10 minutes, then I take more off. You can’t put a price on being able to go to the bathroom. Many a good show has been made miserable by not being able to drink or go.

  • Depends how much food the other artist brings by the booth. A cherry pie ala mode is worth 20%, while a peanut butter sandwich is only worth 5%.

    • I make a "killer RUM BUNDT CAKE"~what would that get me?!!! (LOL)

  • All sales are case by case situations. So I don't have a standard practice just because the buyer is another artist. In fact, I've bought plenty art from other artists and I can only vaguely remember one case where the artist said, "Now let me factor in the artist discount."

  • Depends, but normally 20%, no sales tax.
