Commercial liability insurance

Does anyone have source for liability insurance for less than $500? Some art fairs sell participation for $25 to $50 which is fine, but I am facing a March 1 deadline and really would like to find a source for insurance in the $200 to $250 range if possible. Thanks, Jim

  • I also carry insurance through State Farm.  Just a note of caution here about what you're insuring.  If you have other aspects to your business other than just shows you should have a policy that covers those as well.  For instance, I contacted RLI for a quote as my policy with State Farm is up for renewal.  I have begun teaching workshops in addition to doing shows, and the RLI rep informed me that they won't cover hands-on teaching, just instructional classroom lecture type workshops.  State Farm will cover hands-on teaching as long as it is related to my core business (photography).  My advice is to make sure that whatever you buy will cover all of your needs before you make a long-term commitment.
  • There is a new ad that just popped up on the home page for an insurance comapny.  The program is for Artists, Crafters and Tradesmen.  I checked out their sight and the prices are very competitive.  It seems like signing up only takes a couple minutes also.  Here is the site www.actinspro.com
  • Hi,

Well, this topic is timed perfectly. My wife does carry insurance through RLI (see below) but has never had to file a claim. I recently asked for a quote for some other friends.

I know two artists who had claims with RLI from last summer's storms. This was a potter in Omaha and a fiber artist in Evanston Illinois, same storm about 18 hours apart. Both were satisfied with their settlement. I believe that they paid the full amount, less deductible, for their booths and fixtures and the wholesale price of their merchandise.

If anyone would like to contact those artists, let me know.

    Re: Show Insurance

Don - We have a Homebased Artist Policy through RLI Insurance. The annual premium is $220 for 1M liability and $5,000 coverage for inventory, supplies and equipment whereever it is. Just have them email me for the application at carpentercage@comcast.net

  • I know this was posted a few months ago, You can always change next year. I took out a $500,000 liability policy with Auto Owners insurance company a year ago, have never used it but it was $125.00. The most reasonable that I could find. Check with a Independent insurance agent as well.
  • Did not read all of the replys, but have you checked with your home owners insurance Co? I have a rider on my policy for coverage - costs me $150 per year. I do know that some insurance companies do not have addendums or riders, you have to buy a policy specifically for your business. But call & check it out.

  • I have had a couple different carriers that ran $500-$600 and would include liability as well as all the coverage I would need if I owned a warehouse, trucking equipment etc yet NO coverage while in transit between shows (while not at home)

So I did get feedback from a couple of artists who actually filed claims and they use RLI insurance happily and successfully. It runs about $300 a year, covers my stuff while in transit as well as at shows and home and has high liability coverage. (decently low deductible)
  • Wondering if anyone has ever made a claim. Have heard stories (don’t know if true) about what you thought was covered, was actually not. Plus getting only value of materials vs. artist’s retail value.
  • I carry mine through State Farm -- it runs me about $275/year.
