I read Michelle Wermuth's discussion in Newbies Central with great interest.  I am about to apply to my first juried show and am struggling with choosing my pieces to submit.  I design/craft jewelry.  Many of my designs are strung.  I understand that there are those who do not consider stringing to be art and I don't want to argue that point here.  I also have designs crafted of wire - bent, twisted, wrapped, coiled, hammered, etc.  My gut tells me to include a variety of styles, to show the range of my work. But from what I've read on Michelle's convo, that could confuse jurors.  But am I misrepresenting myself if I only submit one style?  Especially when applications state that submissions should represent your body of work?

Thank you in advance for any input.

  • Do not try to show range of work - rather pick pieces that show a consistent theme or style.  In your booth shot have your range of work.  I create forged and fabricated metal jewelry as well as beadwoven pieces.  In my booth shot, I have both and I include both in my artist statement but my shots are generally of my metal work.  If I am going for the beadwoven work then I pick shots of those but I don't mix the two.  I was told that showing both is too confusing for most shows.  Some of it depends on the show.  There are some smaller, lower tier local shows that I have shown both and gotten in.
