Like all newer artists I am not sure how to best approach the concept of gathering email addressed for my monthly e-newsletter. I left a notebook and pen at my booth, but heard patrons express concern to not have their info out for everyone to see. I tried a large wooden cigar box and printed blank forms on card stock...often people ignored this. And I ask patrons as they make purchases, but I would love to know what you do that works! So feedback please.

My first few years of fairs, I would put my subscribe book out at each fair with a fake email address at the top and trust that people that were interested would sign up on their own. As the economy became more challenging, I realized that it was my mailing list that was keeping me afloat. I now really work my list and regularly invite people in my booth to join after they have shown a serious interest in my work. I also host an annual open studio event where I invite my list. I use this as a hook to interest people in signing up.
I think this has been addressed on this site before and you might be able to search for the discussion, Barbara.
Basically what we did was hang a spiral bound notebook at eye level on the wall in the booth with a sign on it saying "sign up for our email list and win a photo." To get it started I'd always add a fake email address at the top. We asked only for a name and email address. It really worked. We held a drawing at the end of each show. Of course we also captured this info at the time of a sale. In addition, we had an email sign up widget at the top right hand corner of our website.
Thank you Connie. And i will also spend some time reasing through the resources on this site. So sorry I may have duplicated the question. Thanks again.

That is not a problem, Barbara. Just wanted you to be able to get more answers. I'll make this tip of the day tomorrow to get you more help. I know it is out there...
You want to get all the info from the people that purchase from you. I have them feel a contact card before I send the receipt via email since I using square to process the credit cards.
I will put the sign list out because what you want to collect is the people that are interested but can not purchase from you at that point.
People are will always give you excuses why they wont sign but what choice you have.

Hey Barbara, I just put "email marketing" in the search box up in the right hand corner -- some good information came through. Check it out.
