I'm a computer techie junkie, especially security issues.  I listen to a podcast by renowned security guru Steve Gibson to keep up on what's going on.  Steve Gibson invented the word spyware.  In a recent podcast Steve turned us on to a new free browser addon called Ghostery.  As you may or may not know, you are being tracked everywhere you go on the internet by a number of advertising and data mining companies.  All your efforts to block this by using spam filters and cookie blockers do not work, AND, don't think that because you use a Mac, that your every move isn't being followed and recorded.  This is about browsing, not which Operating System you use.  Ghostery is a free browser addon that works.  Here is the link: http://www.ghostery.com/download

There is a version for the 4 major browsers.  Once you download it, you can follow the wizard to enable the features that you like.  I enabled everything and I really like it.  First of all, you have to turn it on, called opt-in.  Most addons, features, spam, etc. are opt-out meaning you have to turn something off if you don't want it.  I like that philosophy.  Second, when you go to a web site, a box appears, for a few seconds, in the upper right which tells you what is being blocked.  You should notice a difference immediately in that your computer will be less noisy because those data mining companies will not be allowed to write to you hard drive, especially Google and Facebook.  And, yes, Google and now Facebook record your every move on the internet.
