Barbell weights for tent?

I've been using bag weights I got at Sam's for a couple of years. I filled them with pebbles and they're starting to tear apart.

3 questions:

1- when using this bag type of weight do you secure it just to the bottom of the legs or connect them from the top corner?

2 - has anyone used the weights they put on the end of bars for weight lifters? The flat round ones with the hole in the center.  I have some of these & I'm thinking of using them but I wondered if anyone has experience with them. They'd be flat on the ground with an eye bolt for the strap connecting them to to the top corner.

3 - What I've seen most at shows are the concrete/PVC pipe ones that hang about half way down from the top. How reliable are these?

As you can see, I'm dithering! My hubby is going to make the new weights for me and I'm not sure which direction to go in.

  • Most people use the pvc weights- I hate them because they are cumbersome and roll, but we have them.   I have used barbells- the kind you use in your hand, not the flat round plates- as weights - they are smaller and easier to carry.  However, I don't use them in the front of the booth, just the back because they aren't pretty.  Their shape allows me to strap it horizontally to the leg.  it's a cheap way to go, too, and 25-30 pounds is easily added to each leg.

I have a friend that uses iron bars that are slim and add little visual impact- got them at a metal fabricating place- if you know of any place like that!

    • Thanks, Patty! My husband is making me some PVC weights. He's adding handles that will hopefully make them easier to handle.

      • Here is a photo of the one my husband made with the handle.  I now have two pieces of two sided white Velcro I use to strap them to the legs. Don't forget the eye bolt for attaching the tie strap.

  • I had been thinking about the barbell weights as they are relatively inexpensive. I had in mind tying them to the corners with two ropes in a lopsided Vee arrangement which keep them from swaying. The advantage of the barbell weights is they are thinner than the PVC pipe weights.

    • Let us know how they work out!

  • 1 Tie strap from the top, bag at the bottom strapped to the leg but not touching the ground.

    2 No

3 I use these but mine are filled with sand and we added a handle to help carry them.  The are also suspended from the top by tie straps, and I use two two sided Velcro straps on each one to strap them near the bottom of the legs, making sure they are not touching the ground.

    • Thanks Chris -

I've decided to go with the PVC weights. Glad that's decided on!
