I had heard of pop-up stores but a strip shopping center managment company in Florida is taking this one step further and helping out the art community.
I stopped into this gallery and it was great. The artist is not allowed to do anything to the space but hang things on the walls and if he does make any changes, he has to remove them when his time is up. The weird colored cement floor made the space seem more like a loft and the big cavernous space added to the feeling.
Add a very fun, outgoing artist, with his easel set up by the front window and you can't help but walk in. He is doing this in addition to art shows, he will be at Beaux Arts in January.
Maybe the managers in your towns would be interested in doing this.

We did this last year for November and December in a vacant retail space in Marquette. Everyone had to bring their own display and it worked well. I t was so successful that someone saw the space and rented it.
I wonder if this space, in Florida, would be good for people coming down to do shows? I have a few weeks in between events and this would be better than just hanging around waiting for the next event. I have their email address. I'm going to find out what their rate is, etc.
I know of three malls in the Detroit area: Livonia, Rochester and Novi that have these galleries. I believe the artists participating are pretty happy with the sales also.
I think the mall in Ft.Wayne, Indiana did something similar as well.
SOunds like a great idea! LOVE IT.
Hope it comes to my city.:)
I'm part of a similar thing in downtown Belleville, IL. The Sole Survivor shoe store moved a block away & they owned the building of their old space. They have turned it into a gallery space with approx 16 local artists displaying & working the gallery and there is studio space for 3-4 artists.
