Wondering whether anyone has been able to get entry fees back from fair organizers after the cutoff date! Here's my story. Had recent back surgery which made attendance at 3 shows impossible. Had differing responses from the management. One, the Guild, returned my entry fee (they always do the right thing). Another said that they would credit my fee with entry the following year, The third, refused to refund my money because the cutoff date passed. I think this is unfair given the legitimacy of my need. Any thoughts out there? I am looking into whether insurance can cover this similar to insuring a unused airline ticket, due to medical purposes!

Show directors are not running NAIA. You prevaricate like a Tea Partyist. Really.
Stephen King-Des Mones, is on the board and he's been a very pro-artist show director. Having Stephen on the board is a huge plus because he has "clout," other show directors will listen to him. I have been in his shows for the past 3 years (have you?) and I know from personal experience the way Stephen, his staff, and the Des Moines art festival supports artists, listens to artists, is very PRO artist. His participation is a huge plus for artists and NAIA. We now have a respected voice talking to his fellow directors as to what artists' needs are.
The other "show director" is Lois Songer, who is an artist as well as a show director. NAIA would like to have all artists on the board, not enough stepped up to volunteer. NAIA is always in need of more artist volunteers.
The rest of the board is made up of artists.
Holly you gave many great hours to NAIA, you set-up their new forum (and it was a huge task & you took many lumps for it...from your fellow artists), and your contributions to NAIA are more then I can list, or even know. It saddens me to see you try to tear down an organization you spent so much time and talent building up.

I have written and re-written 4 responses to this self-indulgent pile of nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives bound together with a nauseating, agenda-driven syrup drizzled all over and around it to somehow, some way - make it stick together.
Nothing I wrote seemed to be the appropriate response to this drivel. I either revised it several times and then hit "delete" - or I just deleted it and re-wrote something new - only to delete that as well. I am usually not at a loss for words, but this was ridiculous. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't put together an answer to this posting. It isn't especially passionate or intelligent - it should have been like shooting fish in a barrel.
Then I stepped back, re-read it several times and only then did I realize the true problem:

So you are saying I am pandering to Stephen King to get a good spot in the show. You don't know me at all. I don't pander. But you won't believe that. I say what I think and I don't kiss butt. If Stephan King and DMAF were jerks I'd say so.
FYI: I am already in this show, because of Des Moines artist friendly practices. I was one of the 4 artists who was literally blown out of DMAF last year. DMAF offered those of us a space for this year if we wanted it. I decided to try DMAF another year. Its a 3 day trip for me. Its not a show I hafta do. In fact its a bit of a pain to do. Meaning: I have no reason to pander to Stephen King or his staff.
Your post back to me was nothing more then a personal attack. I see by your limited and mostly anon profile you are a resident of Des Moines. Its easy to cast stones from behind the anon rock. Yet another example of why I don't like forums that don't require real names.
Now, rather then discourage discourse that you disagree with, by attacking the poster & their character, can you offer something positive and constructive?
"The Help." Good book that accurately describes those attitudes that were prevalent. And I do agree that the comparison is apt. I do not think I could phrase it any better than you did.
I often wonder how artists can choose to run a show and ignore this major lack of ethical behavior.
It is unethical for any show to keep an artist's booth fee IF the booth space is filled after the artist cancels for ANY reason.
Why is it so hard to figure this out? A show should never consider keeping a fee if they fill the space. Why would they even think that this is something they can consider other than the fact that it has been done that way for years? Share the idea that a show does not see that it is only just and right to return the money with others not in our business. They will think you are crazy to work under those conditions. If the show does not return the fee upon filling the space, then don't cancel at all; just keep your options open since you will lose your fee anyway. The shows want us to be courteous and cancel early. Do we kiss their shoes as well?
If an artist cancels a show for any reason at any time and the space is filled, the booth fee must be returned. It is the ethical thing to do; the honest thing to do.
I am sorry for ignoring your orginal post, but I guess you could say I have to say something regarding a post... If you have business insurance - as we all should - see if you can get your money through them if you are not having any luck with the promoter. If the fee was $50 most likely you might just want to call it a wash, however it is $500 that is a different story and something the insurance should be able help you with. - Michelle

I don't have business insurance, but have asked my insurance company to look into the possibility of insuring this type of "loss." Do you have this kind of insurance, and if so, what is it called?

You can get insurance for your home based business through RLI although I don't believe this would be covered. It covers liability and loss of inventory due to theft or breakage. Contact Chris Alexander of RLI for more info

I also have insurance thru RLI. It is very inexpensive so no reason not to have it. Between RLI and my trimline I am much less stressed doing shows. I think Diane is right, it may not cover being sick and show fees, mine doesn't
