Art Fair Judging

I am organizing the first art show of its size in our area, and would like some input into how you select your judges who can review artwork, photography, jewelry, pottery, leather, metal and wood working. Who do you call upon who can judge the quality of all these areas?

  • You need a diverse group of judges with some expert in each medium you are accepting. Within that group they need to be able to spot originality and discuss their opinions with each other.

I wouldn't worry about buy sell in the jury images because people that bring bought stuff to shows rarely try to jury with it. But be prepared to make artists remove things they didn't jury with when at the show.

Everyone will bring their own biases to the jury room which is why the jurors need to discuss their opinions with each other. And though even experienced exhibiting artists have biases, at least they know what a booth images needs to look like and what good original work is.

I recently wrote a post about stupid things that jurors did. In most cases those things might not have happened if the jurors had either been given proper instructions by the show director, or asked the show director if they had a question. Like I said before, put the jurors in the same room and let them discuss and justify their choices.
