I've never attended this show as artist or visitor, so  I am puzzled by the statement on the application: "For Sunfest, artisan (sic) in the Arts & Crafts Tent and Food Tent will be rented an 11'6" front  x 10' wide booth space.  The booth will be framed only in wood."

I'm not getting a good mental picture of what this show looks like (and can't find any decent pictures on the Web to help me.) Can someone who has done the show describe the configuration? What does "the booth will be framed only in wood" mean?   Is it a typical outdoor show where artists/crafters bring their own tents?  Or do the organizers set up humongous outdoor tents and the artists set up tables inside?

Thanks!

  • Thanks, Charlene! The best info I've received yet. I had heard from the event coordinator; her response consisted only of a link to the parent webpage (OC government page), which I already had. So not very useful. :-(

I have done this show for 4 or 5 years. The tents are very, very large...resembling a circus tent or to use your word, humongous. The structures inside are wooden frames to which you can nail, screw, hammer etc. into. I bring my propanels and tract lighting and bins for my 2D work. Some exhibitors bring peg board or table displays. It depends on your medium. At the very least you will need to make a barrier of some sort to maintain a definition of your space within the rustic frame. Many bring curtains which you could easily hang and reuse. If you bring your own tent you may not use the canopy covering on the top but you can use the frame and walls. The show goes until 10 pm so you will definitely need lighting. It is very well organized.
    Good luck

  • Thanks, Michelle!
I've got the lodging squared away if I want it, lots of friends in the area. I checked out craftlister.com and ran Lord-knows-how-many searches and couldn't find a thing. (It is one of the best examples I've ever seen of a website created by people who didn't know how--absolutely un-navigable.) Which is not YOUR fault, of course! :-)

Anyway, the site DID cough up the name of a webpage that gave me the names of the municipal government department that runs the show, so I've written them and got an acknowledgment (but no hard info yet). So your lead will probably bear fruit in a few days. Thanks again!

  • I am familiar with the show, but don't understand the restrictions. What I do know is a few years back there was a HUGE storm that went through and nearly everyone had their canopies damaged and items broken. It was so bad they had to redo the rules for canopies and the like. It is on the beach by the board walk (on regular ground/asphalt). It gets A LOT OF TRAFFIC! It is one of the bigger shows in the area and many of my craft friends do it. I haven't only because the date of the show interferes with other shows and 2-3 nights in OC during this time is peak season rates - EXPENSIVE. I wish I could be of more help with your question, but I do know there are some who have gone to this show and raised questions about this show on craftlister.com - a free site - and check out their forums. It isn't a "wonderful" site, but there is info about Sunfest there.
