Working on an application for a show we've never done before.  I'm used to apps having very specific requirements regarding digital size requirements or submitting 4x6 photos. Just received an application that specifies photos only and no larger than 8x10.

I would assume that photos are scanned for the jury process (have sent an email to the producer to confirm my assumption).  If they are scanned, is there any advantage to submitting an 8x10 vs. the normal 4x6 print?  Obviously there's a cost difference to print the photos and I'm just wondering if there's a benefit.

  • I've applied to a few shows that still haven't gone digital. They do indeed pass around the 8x10 photos.

  • I assume by asking for prints, the photos will be passed around a table. I would definitely recommend 8x10 instead of 4x6. It will make your work more impressive.

Here's a link to an article I wrote about what to submit if given a choice between slides, prints or digital images:

    • Thanks Larry, again, I'm confirming with the producer to determine if the images are scanned.  If they pass photos around the table 8x10 makes sense.  If they actually scan them to send them to the jury (I know of one show that actually does this), should we still send the 8x10's?

      • What show would scan prints instead of asking for digital images? That's kind of ridiculous because the image starts out digital and then gets printed loosing some of the fine detail and then gets scanned back into digital loosing even more of the fine detail. A scanned print will never look as good as the original.
