Any thoughts on Etsy!

One of my goals after the show season was to get an Etsy site up. Need another source of income on top of shows and galleries I'm in. My website gets tons of hits..no purchases. It is too hard to navigate and too expensive to update. I set up my Etsy account a couple of weeks ago. EASY to set up, even for a rock head like me. Within the first 10 days I sold three lamps. Now I am trying to figure out how to promote. So far I have sent all my contacts a link to new site. We will see. Any successful Etsy people out there willing to share some tips? Merry Christmas.. Kevin

  • I've had an Etsy shop for about a year and a half.....that's awesome that you started selling so fast! I have a website in addition to my Etsy shop, my website is my main site where I have all my news, show schedule, and information about my canvases. I use Etsy to sell my prints only, it's not really the best place for expensive artwork. What I've learned about Etsy is that you have to list or relist as often as possible (a couple of times a day is best) so that people can find you. Their search engine is set up so that when you list an item in your shop, you're at the top of the search if someone is looking for lamps.....a day or two later you're on page 10 or 12 or 20 when someone is doing a search for lamps because Etsy is so huge. People don't generally go through 20 pages before finding what they want. Of course, stacked stone lamps is a pretty specialized product, it's not like photographs or necklaces, you get behind really quick in categories like that. Use all your tags when you list your items, if you have several things to list, spread out listing them instead of listing them all at once. Hmmm, let's see, participate in the forums because people in the forums will go to your shop and maybe add you to their 'favorites' list. The more favorite lists you are on the better because when customers go to their shops, they'll find you if they look in their favorites. Also be generous with who you add to your favorites list because people will often return the favor. I mean, don't do it just for that reason but it helps lol.
  • Kevin,

My wife handles the promoting on Etsy so I asked her for advice. She said make sure you have plenty of key words, and use Twitter and Facebook. Also we have one of our sites go directly to Etsy. Other than that just make sure pictures are good if not great and have full descriptions of the item.

I saw your booth at the Apple Fest in Charlevoix this past October, beautiful work!

    Good Luck
