Any thoughts of Etsy?

One of my goals after the show season was to get an Etsy site up. Need another source of income on top of shows and galleries I'm in. My website gets tons of hits..no purchases. It is too hard to navigate and too expensive to update. I set up my Etsy account a couple of weeks ago. EASY to set up, even for a rock head like me. Within the first 10 days I sold three lamps. Now I am trying to figure out how to promote. So far I have sent all my contacts a link to new site. We will see. Any successful Etsy people out there willing to share some tips? Merry Christmas.. Kevin

  • I LOVE Etsy!!! http://www.etsy.com/shop/esmeraldadesigns had my site there for two years now, more than 400 sales. Helps in between shows and to encourage local customers to come visit shows, too. I promote through shows, facebook, website, twitter. This is what I have found out:
*Etsy is huge competition and you have to be able to be found.
*Relisting puts your lisiings at the top of a search, for a brief time. Sometimes thats all it takes.
*Take great pictures -most of you already have great ones for applying to art shows and for website.
    *Play Nice:b
*Send a little gift with purchase, Hey that's how Estee Lauder built her empire.

SO-this is my experience for my media, hope it can help someone.

  • I love Etsy. I have had a site for a while and use it to sell when I am not at shows. www.etsy.com/shop/JackandMaryHandbags.

I do not renew a lot like some people suggest. I do post my Etsy site everywhere and have it on y business cards.
  • I thought about adding "The Etsy Wars" to this topic, but it's really not about Etsy tips, so I added a new discussion under Marketing & Sales....
  • I set my etsy site up today and it seems fairly straightforward and easy to maintain. I know i'm going to have to make some modifications and improvements as I learn about it.
Reading this discussion finally got me going on it, we shall see how it works out.
  • I have had my Etsy page up for a little while now and find it to be a great way to make some extra money...I promote my store through my blog and on Facebook. Whenever I add new stock, I post in both of these places. Flickr is another way to promote your store...post a photo of one of your lamps and mention that it is available for sale on Etsy with a link....
  • People that are cheking Etsy, loking for low prices products, but I can say work. I sail my Lightings there and very good.

  • Kevin: Thanks so much for sharing your immediate success on Etsy. I haven't joined yet, but you've given me the feedback to get moving on that idea.

Thanks and when I get some tips, I'll share them with you.

    Happy Holidays to you.

  • I love Etsy, and the trick is to keep your product on the first page in your category. Renew, renew, renew. I sell mosaic pet dish holders. Signed up in April of 2008, but didn't start listing anything until August. Since them I've sold 86 items. Not bad for sitting at my computer, listing items, and then packaging them up for shipment. It definitely helps with the mortgage. When I am at a show I always put in a note to "convo" me before purchasing as all of my stock is "on the road."
    Good luck with your endeavor.
