Another newbie here...

...and I've already picked up a lot of useful info. Thanks to the creators and participants here.

My name is Todd Derr and I'm just getting feet wet in my first art festival this coming weekend in my hometown of Owensboro, KY.

Last year I sat up a little umbrella and table at a local farmer's market and started generating interest in my work (watercolor). I was covered, as far as legalities, with the business that held the farmer's market on their sidewalk. I had minor sales and it was a lot of fun being there.

So that brings me to now and my concerns for this weekend. The prospectus mentions I would be responsible for collecting tax on sales. No problem, I can do that. But, I didn't see anything about a permit for myself as a business. I can't seem to make head or tails out of the info I've looked up on Kentucky State government website or the local government as it pertains to business license for an artist working from home.

Surely I'm just not looking in the right place. There has got to be a resource for artist's like me, I know I'm not the only one. I just want to make sure I'm legal and legit. I don't want my first show to be an embarrassment with me getting cited or my home getting raided by men in dark sunglasses. :) Boy, would they be disappointed. I'm small time and struggling just to get the funds and things I need for this show.

Thanks for letting me vent. I'd appreciate any words of advice or just a hello, welcome to the club...now, get to work!! :)

Peace and good day,

Todd

  • Hi Todd and welcome to AFI :)   Congratulations on your first show just around the corner... so exciting!

I'm in Australia so absolutely NO help on the business side of things for you in the States, but I can second what a wonderful resouce AFI is.

Post your query also in the forum under the Business of Art Shows section so that people following that forum will get notified of it and may be able to answer you!

See you around the site - have a great first show and don't forget to pop back in and give us a rundown on it afterwards :)

    • Thanks, Annette

I will try to remember to take some pics and post a little something about the show. It's the first time for the show too. We're trying to bring a little culture to this neck of the woods in Kentucky. Well, besides Bluegrass music...which, I'm not discounting, by the way.

      Cheers,

      Todd
