Hello,

I have seen people put a cross bar through the accordion framework of a pop-up canopy to suspend curtains or banners and the like. I'm curious how much weight something like a Caravan canopy can hold.

I just bought one so I haven't tested it out. What I really want and am not sure will work is that I'd love to suspend pegboard panels around the 3 walls to hang art on. The art isn't very heavy. Nothing is framed. It's mostly unframed canvases and small wood panels or artworks in mats that I'd suspend with clips.

I just like the idea of a clean, graphic look for the booth. I would secure the panels along the bottom with some kind of cross pole to prevent them from swinging.

Any thoughts on if this is nuts?

I don't want to invest in mesh walls because this will likely be the only art show. I'll be doing jewelry. This was just a fluke.

Thanks!

Jane

  • Are you trying to put something together for a one -time use? You mention that this will likely be your only art show.

You can get upper and lower sta bars for pop up tents that will allow you to hang heavier panels from them. Flourish makes and sells them.  http://www.flourish.com/other_brands

This might be an option you want to check out. I have some for the pop up tent I use for the one day art shows and I suspend panels from them and the bottom sta bars keep them from moving at the lower end. It is not an alternative for sta bars but they do work well

  • I use an EZ Up for one day shows. I hang my gridwalls from the cross bars with bungees. The 4 foot tall grids weigh 20 pounds each, and the 6 foot tall ones weigh 30 pounds. I use 6 tall ones (=180 pounds) and 5 short ones (= 100 pounds) for a total of 280 pounds. That's a lot of weight, and the canopy has no problem at all.

That said, mine is an older model and much sturdier than the newer and cheaper ones I've seen. I have seen new models with shorter and more numerous scissor bars. I'm not sure such a design could handle the kind of weight I put on mine.

I don't understand what you are hanging. In one paragraph you say "unframed canvases and small wood panels or artworks in mats" and at the end, you say "I'll be doing jewelry." Which is it? I think pegboard would look tacky. I'd try to come up with something else.

    • Thanks guys. That's great to know Linnea about how much weight your tent supports.

Sorry for the confusion. My primary medium is jewelry but I happen to be in an art show and where I'll need to use walls, whereas with jewelry shows, I won't likely at all or as much.

So I was looking for a tasteful, clean solution for hanging art for this one show and wanted to know what options I have for suspending some kind of panel without the use of Stabars which are $230 for a top and bottom set.

However, I just found out that my space is 8 x 10 and not 10 x 10 so I can't use my canopy at all! But your info is good for the future in case I want to suspend panels of some sort.

      Thanks.
