According to the show director in Wickford, RI, the state has enacted legislation exempting original and limited edition artwork from sales tax.

I don't know about all of you, but for me, the only bad part of doing this for a living is dealing with the varying taxes and reporting requirements from state to state. The states and I spend more time and effort communicating with each other than I generate in tax revenue for them.

I don't know how major purchases of historic, million-dollar-type art would work into this scheme, but my bet is that all most states could drop sales tax on pieces of art worth less than, say, $100,000 and not see any appreciable decline in tax revenue - while seeing a totally appreciable decline in nuisance dealings with artists.

Does anyone have any ideas how we could unite to promote this change?

  • Let's hear it for a state that actually gives somebody a tax cut! More states should do it.

  • While I like the idea of not having to pay taxes, I see that paperwork will still have to be filed.  This does not lighten the load of paperwork for us or the state.

  • Interesting - FYI - here's a link to a page I found describing the legislation / what is considered qualifying art/etc.
