Fans!!!

I definitely need a fan.  Is there a kind out there that is better than the rest or are they all pretty much the same?

  • For that nice looking Rigid battery fan, has anyone tried to mount it so that it blows onto their customers from above or on a corner?

I have seen box style fans mounted directly above, but I was thinking maybe one of the battery Rigid fans in each rear top corner for a walk-in style booth.

Would love to hear feedback on that.

  • I have a long history with fans.  I started out with the battery operated ones like from Amazon or WalMart (Amazon ones are better).  They take 8 D batteries and I ran them overnight in my booth to keep condensation down.  They don't put out a lot of air and they weren't that good for cooling.  Plus it took 16 D batteries per show which got expensive and I hated throwing out all those batteries.  I did a brief try with rechargeable D batteries and I can just say don't go there.  Next I went to lights in my booth and ran a low wattage fan off the batteries.  The fan, despite being low wattage, took as much power as 4 LED lights and it again did not put out much air.  Plus I couldn't run it overnight. If I wanted to go larger on my batteries and recharge every night I might have been able to make that work but I can't lift those larger batteries.  In a quest to lower battery usage and get more air I purchased a Ryobi fan and two of the heavy duty batteries (get the $99 for two deal).  I haven't run them at a show yet but I did some testing.  The batteries charge up very quickly 30 -45 minutes.  The fan runs on high for 8 hours and on low overnight.  After I found this out I bought two more batteries and two more fans. One fan for the booth, one for me, and one for overnight.  Total cost around $300.  They put out a lot of air on high and I think they are going to be the best solution.

  • Michael, For years I have used a swamp cooler (a fan with water) and it does feel like air conditioning. You must have electricity to run a swamp cooler. Good prices at Zoro Tools. Check it out.

  • Go to Home Depot or Lowe's. They have fans that run off an 18v drill battery. Get the 4 amp battery and it will last all day.  Batteries recharge in 45 minutes or so.

I have two -- one Ryobi, one Rigid. I had to special order the Rigid, but that was what sort of drill I already had. The Ryobi they stock on the shelf. The Rigid puts out more air than the Ryobi, but the Ryobi is cheaper and more readily available. Rigid is true variable speed, Ryobi has low/high. Both are "Hybrid" so they can run off a battery or a power cord.

    • Since you've tried both, can you give a comparison between these two fans?

I see that the Rigid's battery is a little bigger and the fan is more powerful, but the fan and batteries are more expensive. The Ryobi is a bit smaller and easier to store. But maybe one Rigid could take the place of two Ryobi's in some cases.

Can you see a clear winner if you were to buy into a set today?

      Thanks,

      Steve

      • Rigid is the better fan by far. True variable speed, 4amp battery, and on high it is twice as powerful as the Ryobi two-speed. However, they're devilishly hard to find. I had to special order mine and I'm so glad I did. Rumor has it they don't make them anymore, so if you find one grab it.

The Ryobi does the job, only about $10 less expensive, batteries are sold in a two-pack, and is readily available off the shelf in big box stores.

    • Getting ready to order my Ryobi fans, batteries and chargers.  Great idea!!! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

  • There are some tent fans for camping. I bought two different one's we'll see how they work in my art fair ten! One is AGPtek 2-1 tent fan and light on Amazon $23.99 and currently Groupon has a deal for a Whetstone 2 in 1 tent fan for $12.99. They both look pretty similar I'm not sure how strong they are but both are battery operated and have hooks you can use to hang them. They aren't very big both about 6"x7"but I'll see how they work. I couldn't find the Black and Decker.

  • Thanks for the info on the Black and Decker portable fan...I'll definitely check that out.  Anyone have a recommendation for a portable battery run fan now as that was 2010?  I have 2 really hot shows coming up!

    • Put a 10x10 white tarp inside your tent to act as a ceiling. The heat stays above the tarp and the inside is cooler. Total price: under 20 bucks.
