10 Years After Colon Cancer

10 Years After Colon Cancer

I had my fifth clean colonoscopy today, 10 Years After Colon Cancer

A colonoscopy saved my life. Ten years ago I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately the tumor was small and hadn't reached any glands. After it was removed I posted to all the forums I participated in and as a result, had many people get a colonoscopy. In fact, I even had two people call to thank me for motivating them after it was discovered they had tumors which were removed.

My first colonoscopy was when I was 53 and it turned out to be a few years too late. So if you're approaching 50 and haven't had one yet, hopefully my story will motivate you.

You can read more about it on my web site:

  • Dear Larry,

I am so happy for you! My husband just got diagnosed with stage 3 of colorectal cancer this March. Doctors found it after a colonoscopy because he didn't have much appetite for months and I am a pretty damn good cook. This was his first colonoscopy and he is 43, fit, healthy, so we never thought something could be wrong. He is having robotic surgery next week to remove the tumor after finishing his 1st round of chemo and radiation. After surgery he will have to continue with a very aggressive chemo treatment. This year I had to pick and choose my shows because I won't have my favorite helper and supporter :(  . Thank you for encouraging others to do regular check ups. It doesn't matter your age, just do it! All cancer is curable if found early.

After hearing the bad news I decided to create awareness between my family and friends so I signed up to run the Chicago Marathon with the American Cancer Society. It will be my 1st marathon but every penny I am raising will help to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. I am running for the fighters, the survivors and the ones that lost the fight. So you will also be on my list :) Because you are all warriors!

    Congrats Larry!

    • Best wishes to you and your husband, Carla. What a blow this has to have been. Continue taking care of each other.

    • Hi Carla,

Sorry to hear about your husband. I hope everything works out OK.

      • Carla and Larry... I was diagnosed with stage 3 in Sept '10 after becoming extremely ill on vacation. Had emergency surgery. There were some positive lymph nodes so I was advised to do chemo. I have a 6 month scan tomorrow, but all my tests so far and my colonoscopy have been perfect. I have been very lucky so far. A colonoscopy is the easiest test you will ever have. If I had had one before it progressed so far, a simple surgery would have been all I needed. It is a painless procedure that takes very little time. They give you some happy juice, you nap, you go home, Everyone..do it. Really. Good luck to you and your husband, Carla.

    • Best of luck to your husband, Carla! And good luck with the Marathon!

  • Congratulations on your milestone! Screening tests are a great advance. Too bad more people don't take advantage of these tests. Thank you for continuing to remind us.

  • Good Man!

Totally endorse having these done  routinely esp if they find polyps

  • Great news, Larry. Colon cancer is nothing to be ignored and wonderful that you caught it early and are still here to celebrate. Congratulations!

    • Dear Larry,

We never hear enough GOOD news some days.

So, I thank you for sharing your wealth and

Thank God a good friend has one less worry.

Reminders about health check ups that have a personal face are more meaningful, I feel.

It takes courage to share our journey...you never lack for that, Larry.

Today, I'm filled with gratitude for Larry Berman.

  • so happy for you....I had mine at 50 and was clean
